Religious Discrimination

Federal and state laws prohibit employers from treating employees or job applicants differently due to their religious beliefs or practices. This includes firing, demoting, harassing, refusing to hire, or taking other adverse action against an employee because he or she is or is not:

  • Buddhist

  • Christian

  • Hindu

  • Muslim (Islamic)

  • Indigenous

  • Jewish

  • Mormon

  • Rastafarian

  • Scientologist

Also, employers have to make reasonable accommodations for employees with respect to their religious practices, holidays and other customs as long as there is not an undue hardship on the employer or its legitimate business interests.
